Precise assessment. Understanding function.

Precise assessment. Understanding function.Careful urogynecological assessment is the foundation for treating pelvic organ prolapse. The aim is not simply to determine whether prolapse is present, but to establish which structures are affected, how pronounced the prolapse is, and which functional symptoms are associated with it.

Evaluation begins with a detailed discussion of the symptoms. This includes pressure or a foreign-body sensation, difficulties with bladder or bowel emptying, and any impact on everyday activities or sexual function.

Urogynecological Examination

During a targeted gynecological examination, the different areas of the pelvic floor are assessed systematically. This makes it possible to determine whether the front or back vaginal wall, uterus, or vaginal vault is affected and to assess the degree of prolapse. An ultrasound examination may also be performed to assess the pelvic organs and, depending on the symptoms, bladder function and emptying.

Where clinically indicated, additional investigations may be useful, such as measurement of post-void residual urine or further functional testing.

More Than an Anatomical Finding

The presence of prolapse on examination does not in itself mean that treatment is necessary. What matters is the combination of anatomical findings, functional symptoms, and the degree to which the patient is affected.

Precise diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary treatment while identifying those patients for whom targeted therapy may provide meaningful improvement.

The better the cause and extent of the symptoms are understood, the more precisely the appropriate treatment can be planned.
